At St John’s C of E Primary, it is our intent that we implement our vision of John 10:10 through all areas of school life, including the curriculum.
“I came that they may have life, life in all its fullness.” John 10:10
“A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.” National Curriculum
Intent
At St John’s our intent for our Geography curriculum is that it will inspire our children to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We aim to give our children a broad and balanced curriculum with knowledge of local, national and global geography. Within our Geography curriculum, we seek to equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to investigate and to ask questions to enable them to gain a greater understanding, knowledge and appreciation of God’s world.
Implementation
We have worked to create a comprehensive curriculum cycle, matching the requirements of the National Curriculum. Our Geography curriculum teaches skills and knowledge over half-termly blocks and high-quality resources, such as Plan Bee, support our planning. We believe our children should be inquisitive and to inspire this we start each topic with a question for the children to investigate. The children have access to access to a wide range of geographic information both online and offline for them to interpret. These include maps, aerial photos and globes. We provide a sequence of learning over our two year cycle to ensure a progression of core locational knowledge and a depth of understanding of key physical features and human processes.
Impact
The impact of our Geography curriculum is that children at St John’s have the key network of skills and knowledge to enable them to develop their geographical thinking and identify connections between our local area and beyond. We provide opportunities for our children to use and develop their geographical skills and build on their knowledge of our globe and their part in it.
